The Winnipeg Art Gallery announced two brand-new hires on Friday as part of its commitment to increase Indigenous representation at its management and curatorial levels.
Lisa Charleyboy will join the WAG as the manager of Indigenous initiatives, while Jocelyn Piirainen will take on the role of assistant curator of Inuit Art.
Charleyboy is a member of the Tsilhqot’in Nation in B.C., and has worked in the Indigenous arts community since 2006 as a broadcaster, writer and creator of the documentary series Urban Native Girl for APTN. Among her duties, she will lead and expand the WAG’s ongoing Indigenization efforts through the development of programming, partnerships and outreach.
Piirainen, an Inuk coming to Winnipeg from Ottawa, has a background in curation, filmmaking and programming. She recently worked with the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the WAG Inuit Art Centre to create an exhibition centred on Inuit sovereignty. She will work with the WAG’s curatorial and education teams for the care, acquisition, research and interpretation of the gallery’s famed Inuit art collection, among other duties.

HALIFAX — A Gord Downie tribute sculpture has been unveiled at Halifax City Hall, in a room that aims to foster conversations about Indigenous history and reconciliation.
The sculpture was created by artist Al Hattie using recycled metals that emulate a microphone stand and Downie’s signature hat, complete with feathers.
The piece is situated in city hall’s Legacy Space, the first municipal building in Canada with a room dedicated to reconciliation.
