A truck pulled up outside Oseredok a few weeks ago carrying more than an exhibition.

Inside were the panels of Ukrainian Voice: A Legacy Mosaic, a monumental artwork built from the printing blocks once used to reproduce the photographs and illustrations in one of Canada’s longest-running Ukrainian newspapers.

A dozen people gathered to unload it. Some were longtime members of Winnipeg’s Ukrainian community; others were newcomers who had arrived since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Together, they lifted, unpacked and carried the panels through Oseredok’s doors.

It was an ordinary act of volunteer labour, but also a fitting final stage in an extraordinary journey. More than a century ago, Ukrainian newcomers created the newspaper whose printing blocks form the mosaic. Now another generation of newcomers was helping bring that history home.

CT-scanner to operate in Dauphin next week

BRANDON — A CT-scanner is expected to be operational in Dauphin next week after the city’s hospital closed in early July.

The unit, which is being set up on the grounds of the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, will be in use as of Sept. 23, Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara said Wednesday.

“We were originally told it was going to take many months to have CT up and running … We said that timeline was unacceptable,” Asagwara said.

Dauphin’s emergency department reopened on Sept. 7. The facility was forced to close on July 1 due to significant flooding in its basement that damaged mechanical and electrical systems throughout the building.

Novig is a “peer-to-peer” gambling app that allows people south of the border to bet against each other on the outcomes of professional sports, as opposed to betting against “the house,” as is the case with traditional sports books. And it just so happens that Sweeney, either from a direct investment or as payment for her participation in the ad campaign, is now an equity partner in Novig.

A North Dakota man faces a string of charges after police say he fled the Emerson border crossing, leading RCMP on a pursuit along Highway 75.

Emerson RCMP were notified just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday that a man entering Canada from North Dakota had sped away from the port of entry after Canada Border Services Agency officers flagged him for a secondary screening.

Officers from several RCMP detachments and the Integrated Border Enforcement Team were sent to Highway 75.

Police said Morris RCMP tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle south of the town. Police later blocked Highway 75 at Provincial Road 210, but said the driver went around police vehicles, drove through a ditch and narrowly missed an officer before continuing north toward Winnipeg.

The GLITTER program in Portland was held up last week as a glowing example of progressive, community-minded litter removal that Winnipeg and its downtown agencies should aspire to replicate.

Well, the grass may seem greener, and the encampments a little cleaner, but ask around and you may learn that Winnipeg already has community-led programs doing this work and doing it well.

I can’t fault anyone for raising the merits of a made-in-Portland program for the sake of discussion. After all, it is a timeless Winnipeg pastime to ask why our city lags behind others on any number of trends, programs, or amenities. But the suggestion that “some version” of GLITTER should be considered here falls short when it fails to acknowledge the parallel efforts already delivering results here.
