Welcome to a small sample size season, when sweeping observations and hot takes can quickly become outdated and — occasionally — out of touch.

With that as a cautionary backdrop, the Winnipeg Jets are off to a 2-0-1 start that has them temporarily occupying top spot in the Central Division.

“We were optimistic that we’re a better team than we showed last year,” said Jets captain Adam Lowry. “We want to play fast. We want to compete hard, and we want to give ourselves a chance to win every night, so I think we’ve done that.”

As the Jets welcome the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday to open a three-game homestand, they’ve gotten off to a fast start in a season that required one.

Klein promises fixes to Winnipeg Transit network overhaul failures

A mayoral candidate is promising to restore at least 150 previously removed bus stops, extend Winnipeg Transit service to later hours and guarantee front-door bus dropoffs at acute-care hospitals.

In his Wednesday “Bring the Bus Back” announcement, Kevin Klein said Winnipeg Transit’s bus network overhaul, which has been in place for the past 16 months, has left some passengers stranded, with fewer stops and shorter hours at night.

“We need an effective, efficient… transit system that is safe, in order to grow, in order to expand,” said Klein.

The new primary transit network was part of the Winnipeg Transit Master Plan city council approved in 2021. Klein was the city councillor for Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood at the time and voted against the plan.

Manitoba Federation of Labour calls for independent review of Workers Compensation Board

A major labour association is calling for an independent Workers Compensation Board review as Manitoba leads the country in workplace injury rates.

Last year, 2.5 employees in every 100 reported a workplace injury serious enough to take time off, WCB tracking shows. The number is higher than any other province — just as it has been for the past three years, according to the Manitoba Federation of Labour.

(In 2025, the next highest time loss injury rate was in British Columbia: 2.04 people for every 100.)

“Our prevention work in Manitoba is failing Manitobans,” said Kevin Rebeck, president of the Manitoba Federation of Labour. “We need an independent review to help shine a light on, ‘What is happening on the prevention front of WCB?’”
