THE ANGRY DRAGONS

The Angry Dragons (Transistor 66)

Joanne Rodriguez (American Flamewhip/VaGiants) has one of the greatest, most versatile voices in the city and has yet to be a part of a band not worth seeing. Her winning streak continues with the Angry Dragons. This talented quartet, which includes other local scene vets Jen Alexander (guitar), Anastasia Chipelski (bass) and Bill Northcott (drums), specializes in raw, raunchy garage rock, with a dash of punk and a heaping side of Phil Spector’s roster of ’60s girl groups.

This 10-track album was originally a tour promo for the band’s forthcoming seven-inch, but is now an official release, which explains the difference in production qualities between the originals and covers, evenly divided on the disc. The originals are highlighted by the shake, rattle and roll of Snake Apartment (the first of many times Alexander gets to show off her killer solo chops) and Ronettes-esque Got to Be You. With the exception of Melvin — their take on Them’s Gloria — the covers are wonderfully obscure tracks by the likes of the Cheater Slicks, the Seeds and the Golliwogs. ‘Ö’Ö’Ö’Ö
