IT may be a new year, but when it comes to trending topics, Michael Jackson’s name refuses to go gentle into that good night. A previously unreleased clip of Michael Jackson song Another Day appeared online via TMZ early Monday.

Only 90 seconds of the tune is currently available, and features Jackson singing: “My life has taken me beyond the planets and the stars/ And you’re the only one that could take me this far/ I’ll be forever searching for your love.”

TMZ reports the song was recorded as a duet with Lenny Kravitz, and according to Rolling Stone, Another Day shares some similarities with an old song of Kravitz’s, Storm, off his 2004 record Baptism.

Kravitz doesn’t sing on the leaked clip, but shortly after Jackson’s death, the rocker wrote a letter to Spinner, talking about his time working with the late King of Pop.

“I got to work with Michael on a track that has not been released, and it was the most amazing experience I’ve had in the studio,” Kravitz told Spinner. “He was funny; very funny and we laughed the whole time. I also saw what a beautiful father he was. He was a beautiful human being.”

However, TMZ posted a later story citing sources insisting the song was never meant to see the light of day. Sony, with the support of Jackson’s estate lawyers, wants to have the song pulled off the Internet, TMZ reported.

For his part, Lenny Kravitz posted a video saying he didn’t leak the song and he has no idea how it got out there.

He says the song is not mixed and not a final version.

Derek King typically has ice in his veins.

But the Manitoban admits there may be a few more butterflies than usual as he prepares for the ultimate home game — the 2026 Heritage Classic between the Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens.

“This is so exciting to be back,” King, the NHL’s vice-president of hockey operations and facilities operations, said Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s definitely going to be a fun event to be part of.”

Storm costs not factored in to MPI request for 2.38% rate increase

Manitoba Public Insurance told the Public Utilities Board Tuesday it didn’t factor in reinsurance costs related to devastating summer storms in its application for an increase to vehicle insurance rates.

Cara Low, the Crown corporation’s chief actuary, told the board that given MPI anticipates an increase to reinsurance premiums, the 2.38 per cent increase listed in its application won’t be adequate to cover its costs.

“There’s going to be a significant increase. We still have to decide how much we want to retain, what we want the coverage to look like, and what the upper end needs to be,” she said on the opening day of a three-week hearing.

Nearly 41,000 claims have been submitted in relation to summer storms that swept across southern Manitoba from June to August. Floods, tornadoes and hail pummelled several communities and forced MPI to open satellite claims centres to deal with the record number of calls.

Hit the brakes on driving lessons from mate

Maureen Scurfield 4 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I’ve been trying to learn to drive in busy traffic. My boyfriend said he would teach me, but he gets too playfully amorous while I’m trying to drive his new car in busier areas like downtown. He thinks it’s a big joke, but when I yelled that he was distracting me, he said, “Good.”

So I pulled over, slammed on the brakes and got out, thinking he would get back into the driver’s seat and drive us home, but he didn’t budge. He was being a real jerk.

I got back in, drove us to my place in silence, left the keys in the ignition and went inside and locked my door. Now we’re not talking and neither one of us is apologizing. What do you think?

Convicted harasser accused of targeting old, new victims, including judge

Agnieszka Ciochon-Newton, who was sentenced to six years in prison for mercilessly harassing two people she believed had wronged her, as well as other crimes, wasted no time when her sentence ended to launch fresh attacks on victims new and old, including the judge who convicted her, court documents allege.

The 58-year-old former nurse was arrested last month after Winnipeg police “became aware that (Ciochon-Newton) was engaging in aggressive and harassing behaviours again, starting almost immediately upon the expiry of her parole conditions” on May 13, Det. Sgt Kylie Case wrote in search warrant documents obtained by the Free Press.

Ciochon-Newton is charged with seven counts of criminal harassment, two counts of uttering threats and one count each of fraud, breaking and entering, attempting to obstruct justice, intimidation of a justice official, mischief and defamatory libel. She remains in custody.

Search warrant documents say provincial court Judge Keith Eyrikson learned in late August that Ciochon-Newton had emailed CBC Manitoba days earlier and threatened him.
