There’s been a Power surge in the local radio ratings race.
Power 97 FM was the big mover in Winnipeg radio’s fall audience measurements, which were released Thursday by the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement. The modern-rock station surged past Hot 103 into second place among local stations, grabbing a nine per cent share of listeners aged 12 and up.
Perennial market leader CJOB had a 14.7 share, while Hot 103 and QX 104 both recorded an 8.6 share.
Power 97’s move to the front of the local FM-radio pack might be partly due to the recent arrival of new station Energy 106, which recorded a 6.9 share playing a very similar playlist to the one heard on Hot 103.
“You can never discount a new player in the market, in terms of it kind of having a ripple effect on everyone,” said Sharon Taylor, vice-president and general manager of Astral Manitoba, which owns Hot 103 and QX 104.
“Energy, which is a brand-new station, was on the air during the ratings (period) with no commercials and no announcers; they just ran wall-to-wall music.
“Energy signed on and had a good launch; you can’t have a good launch without affecting the other players in the market.… The next time around, the new entrant will be competing on an even playing field in the sense that they’ll be playing commercials, they’ll be playing CanCon and they’ll have announcers on the air.”
Fab 94.3, the oldies station that made major gains after switching from the top-40/alternative format of its previous identity, Curve FM, continued its ratings growth by posting a 6.6 share. Adult-contemporary station Clear FM and classic rocker 92 Citi FM both posted modest gains, earning shares of 5.9 and 5.6 respectively.
Here is the complete list of 12-and-up ratings from the new book, with last year’s numbers in parentheses:
