Burger Week winners announced
Carlo’s Cucina, a chip shop in Sandy Hook, took home top honours during this year’s Le Burger Week festivities. The restaurant’s Magnifico entry — an Italian-inspired smash burger — was rated among the top five in the country.
FACEBOOK The Magnifico burger from Carlo’s Cucina in Sandy Hook was voted one of the country’s top five favourite entries in this year’s Le Burger Week competition.
The pink-bunned Supreme Barbie Burger from Rudy’s Eat & Drink was also named Judges’ Choice.
Other local favourites, as determined by voting diners, include the Cherry Diablo burger from Brazen Hall, El Patron from Tommy’s Pizzeria, the Whiskey King from Josesy’s Restaurant and Lounge, and the Smokey Bandit from PVG Street Eats.
New coffee comes to the Exchange
Sam’s Place cut the ribbon on its new east Exchange District location last week.
The café and social enterprise project from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Manitoba had been operating on Henderson Highway since 2008. Founded as a used book store to raise money for MCC programming, Sam’s Place has expanded to include a youth work training program.
While book sales were shelved in the move to 140 Bannatyne Ave., the coffee shop continues to offer a selection of gift and decor items.
Sam’s Place is open Monday through Saturday. Visit samsplacecoffee.com for more information.
Wine, snacks and tunes
The Gas Station Arts Centre is hosting an evening of guided wine tasting and live music Thursday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m.
The Great Wine Debate will feature conversations about Old World European varietals and New World North American wines, led by experts from Kenaston Wine Market and One Sixteen. Snack pairings will be provided by the latter.
The event includes a performance by Winnipeg vocalist Sol James.
Tickets are $75 each, available through ticketweb.ca.
Dinner with a tiny chef
Table settings for the Velvet Glove Restaurant’s upcoming dinner series include the usual fare: forks, knives, napkins and a side of 3D projection. Le Petit Chef is a virtual dinner theatre concept that offers diners a four-course meal and an interactive digital show cast onto the restaurant’s tablecloths.
Le Petit Chef, an animated six-centimetre-tall gourmand from France, is the star of the production. During the meal, the holographic cartoon leads guests through a fanciful story filled with culinary foibles.
FACEBOOK Le Petit Chef, a virtual dinner theatre concept, comes to The Velvet Glove next month.
Tickets are $129 per person or $109 for a vegetarian meal. Seatings are available at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday beginning Oct. 13. Visit lepetitchef.com for more information.
