Food giants Nortera and B&G Foods Canada are abandoning their proposed deal after the Competition Bureau sought to block the move.

The two companies say Quebec-based Nortera has halted its bid to buy the Green Giant and Le Sieur brands of canned and frozen vegetables in Canada from New Jersey-based B&G Foods.

A Competition Bureau investigation in August found that the acquisition would likely harm competition through higher prices and fewer choices in the wholesale supply of those vegetables, which include freezer staples such as corn and peas.

Interim competition commissioner Jeanne Pratt has noted that Nortera is already Canada’s dominant processor of many canned and frozen veggies, which it sells under the Del Monte and Arctic Gardens brands.

It has also been the exclusive producer of Green Giant and Le Sieur in Canada for 30 years, announcing in October 2025 a deal to buy the brands outright from B&G.

The two companies say B&G Foods will continue to own and operate Green Giant Canada and Nortera will remain its main co-manufacturer.

Don’t let pyjama jibes sour your bedtime bond

Maureen Scurfield 5 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

DEAR MISS LONELYHEARTS: I got married in August and my new husband just bought himself old-man striped flannel pyjamas to wear to bed now that it’s getting colder out. He didn’t do this before we were married. What a turn-off. Should I buy him a nightcap as well?

He used to be a sexy guy who just dumped his clothes on the chair beside the bed and jumped in naked.

But last night I watched him come out of the bathroom in a ratty old robe. I thought, “He looks like my grandfather, not my husband.”

I called out sarcastically, “Hey, gramps, are you lost?” and he said, “Not anymore.” Then he walked into the spare bedroom and slept there all night without me. Help.

Duo accused in random Osborne Village attacks no strangers to police

Dean Pritchard and Chris Kitching 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:48 PM CDT

A man arrested following a violent, random attack on two men in Osborne Village late Sunday night was released from jail a week earlier after a dozen charges, including crimes of violence, were stayed against him, court records show.

A man in his 40s was sent to hospital in critical condition and another man in his 20s in stable condition following separate attacks shortly before midnight in the vicinity of River Avenue and Osborne Street.

Police have charged Reginald Owen, 26, and Meaghan Owen, 32, both from Little Grand Rapids, with assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. They both remain in custody.

Court records show Reginald Owen was sentenced Sept. 24 to 30 days time served after pleading guilty to simple possession of magic mushrooms. Owen remained in custody until the following day when he was set to apply for bail on charges including assault, sexual assault, choking to overcome resistance, pointing a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Amazon in the weeds over damage to tall grass reserve

Eva Wasney 7 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CDT

Patricia Dutchak was devastated when she first saw the wide swaths of crushed grass and upturned soil at Winnipeg’s Rotary Prairie Nature Park, a municipal heritage site.

“This is a very rare ecosystem, a remnant of tall grass prairie, there’s barely any left in the world, and to come here and see all this damage was heartbreaking,” Dutchak, chair of the Transcona Rotary Club’s parks committee, says.

The club is responsible for maintaining the protected green space, which was significantly damaged this summer when a fence between the park and the neighbouring Amazon distribution centre was relocated.

The 20-acre nature preserve is situated on a narrow tract of land on Regent Avenue West in the commercial heart of Transcona. The park received its municipal heritage designation in 1992 and is, today, surrounded by high-traffic streets, industrial warehouses and car dealerships.

Waiver wire pickup leads Jets to victory in Pittsburgh

Ken Wiebe 6 minute read Monday, Oct. 5, 2026

PITTSBURGH – Now that’s a positive first impression.

The Winnipeg Jets swept a two-game road trip, thanks in part to Clay (Mud) Stevenson making 30 saves in his debut with the team that claimed him off waivers one week earlier.

Stevenson was excellent in a 3-2 victory for the Jets over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night at PPG Paints Arena.

“He obviously made some big big stops, right up to the end of the game there,” said Jets head coach Scott Arniel. “He was real solid and confident and looked comfortable. It was great to see a kid come in here like that, a new organization late in training camp. He came as advertised.”
