The Free Press has been nominated for a prestigious national journalism award.

The Canadian Journalism Foundation has nominated the newspaper for its CJF Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism.

“I’m honoured the foundation has again recognized what our newsroom produces as among the best in the country,” Free Press editor Paul Samyn said on Thursday.

“The nomination for this prestigious award speaks to our commitment to deliver the best possible journalism for those who put their trust in the Free Press.”

The Free Press was nominated for three stories written by reporter Ryan Thorpe in an eight-part investigative series on prison conditions at Stony Mountain Correctional Institution.

Other finalists are the Globe and Mail, Le Devoir, Global News and the Clean Water, Broken Promises Consortium. The consortium, made up of 75 student journalists and more than 125 students, instructors, and journalists, worked together on an investigation into water issues at First Nations.

Journalism foundation jury chairman Christopher Waddell, professor emeritus at Carleton University’s school of journalism and communication, said “the second year of the pandemic didn’t stop Canadian news organizations, both large and small, from doing excellent work on a wide range of national and international issues.

“The compelling stories chosen as finalists covered subjects from across the country and beyond: social policy, policing, prisons, Indigenous affairs, environmental concerns and Canada’s obligations to Afghans fleeing their country. Cumulatively, they highlight some of the major issues that captured attention last year as Canadians took the first steps towards a post-pandemic world.”

The award has been handed out yearly since 1996; the Free Press won it in 2009 and 2013.
