This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the Fabulous 50’s Ford Club of Manitoba’s annual Flashback Weekend.

The fun kicks off tonight at 8 p.m. with a sock hop social at the Transcona Country Club with live dance band the Dynamics and a silent auction loaded with terrific prizes in support of the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation.

On Saturday, a car cruise departs from the Garden City Shopping Centre (south parking lot) at 2 p.m. and makes its way to Lockport and the Half Moon Drive In.

The cruise is free to participate in and open to all classic and special-interest vehicles.

On Sunday, the club presents Manitoba’s largest free car show at the Garden City Shopping Centre.

In previous years, more than 1,000 vehicles have been on display, and organizers are anticipating a record-breaking number of vehicles for the 25th anniversary.

Registration is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and it’s free to register for all classic and special-interest vehicle owners.

The show is also free for spectators and is open from noon to 5 p.m.

Dash plaques will be given away to the first 500 registrants, and there will be class awards for the best cars, a 50/50 draw in support of the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation, a vendors row featuring companies catering to our massive local car scene and live music from the Russell Lee Band.

Following the big show, hundreds of cruisers will make the drive across town to the Grant Park location of the Pony Corral Restaurant & Bar for the weekly Sunday Night Cruise.

As a Vancouver resident and marketing executive himself, Loewen said he understands the conciliatory overtures. The number of Canadians traveling to the United States plunged after President Donald Trump returned to office with remarks about making Canada the 51st state. An acrimonious trade war between the two countries now is threatening to reinforce the informal boycott just as it appeared to be easing slightly.

"It’s such a big ask right now,” Loewen, 45, said of the U.S. tourism industry's attempts to woo Canadians like him back before a new president occupies the White House. “It’s just a wasted effort.”

Relations between the U.S. and Canadian governments have deteriorated sharply since their trade negotiations collapsed last month. Trump imposed import taxes of up to 50% on a range of Canadian products. Canada’s government responded in kind. Trump ordered the U.S. government to change the name of border-spanning Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed insults from members of Trump's Cabinet as childish and undignified.
