Moose won’t take on NHL tough guy

HAMILTON – The Manitoba Moose will not be taking on veteran NHL tough guy Andrew Peters.

Peters is property of the Vancouver Canucks but had been loaned, along with defenceman Nathan Paetsch to the Rochester Americans. The two players, along with a number of other teammates, broke curfew last week and have been jettisoned by the Amerks.

Paetsch has been loaned to the Syracuse Crunch while Peters remains without a home.

Moose GM Craig Heisinger was asked on Tuesday morning if Peters would be joining his club and he simply answered, “No.”

Veteran hockey writer Kevin Oklobzija of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle broke the story on Tuesday morning.

The Amerks are the primary affiliate of the Florida Panthers and after the two players under contract to the Canucks were involved in the curfew fiasco  during a team roadtrip last week, the Panthers told Vancouver they no longer wanted the players in Rochester.

 Panthers prospects Michael Caruso and Michael Duco were also involved and the NHL team originally planned to re-assign them to Cincinatti of the ECHL until Amerks coach Chuck Weber intervened.

Peters agent Steve Bartlett says the Canucks are still trying to find a place for Peters.

A 6-4, 250-pound winger, Peters has seen action in 229 NHL games collecting four goals and three assists as well as a whopping 650 minutes in penalties.

The Moose are at Copps Coliseum this morning for their morning skate in preparation for tonight’s match the Hamilton Bulldogs (6 p.m., CJOB). The club is 1-2 on this road trip with four games remaining and now sits at 5-4 on the season.
