The Winnipeg Blue Bombers 2009 coaching staff is a mix of old and new, fresh faces and grizzled veterans to the game.

New head coach Mike Kelly unveiled his assistants Monday and the eight-member crew brings both a lot of Canadian Football League experience and years in the game in other leagues and at other institutions to the sidelines.

“The biggest thing is they all have high character,” said Kelly. “I’ve known all these guys for a long time. The guy I knew the least was Richard Harris and I think we’re getting caught up pretty quick. He’s got a great personality. They’re high-quality individuals and tremendous teachers and I’ve seen that. And then the level of respect they command and give players will be important.

“There’s a lot of coaching experience who understand what players go through. Add that together and I think we’ve got a pretty good group here.”

Both Harris and Bob Dyce are holdovers from Doug Berry’s staff as is special assistant to the head coach David Siddall, while Ronnie Vinklarek and Rick Campbell come east after working with Kelly last season with the Edmonton Eskimos. Mark Nelson, the new defensive coordinator, brings five years CFL coaching experience to the Bombers and was last with the University of Louisville. He and Vinklarek also worked with Kelly when he was the head coach at Valdosta State.

Andy Cox worked last year with the Webber International University Warriors and coached special teams with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2002-03. He worked with Kelly in 2001 with the Orlando Rage of the XFL. And former Bomber Don Burrell will assistant the staff as a defensive quality control coach.

The staff will spend the next few weeks evaluating their own personnel and that across the CFL to prepare for free agency while piecing together new playbooks.
