More than a dozen homes in the RM of St. Andrews are being evacuated today, as ice jams on the Red River cause flooding north of Winnipeg.

Paul Guyader, emergency co-ordinator for the RM of St. Andrews, said four homes on River Road north of Captain Kennedy Road were flooded this morning and another 10 homes in the area are being evacuated as a precaution.

Guyader said the ice-jam formed at Lockport.

“It’s like a dam,” Guyader said. “If this goes on all night, the river could back up to the Perimeter Highway.”

A provincial sandbagging machine is operating now at the RM of St. Andrews South Fire Hall, at Main Street and Donald Road, and area residents, including those from the RMs of St. Clements and West St. Paul, are directed there for sand bags.

Guyader said an evacuee centre has been set up at the South Fire Hall, and area residents are asked to register if they’ve left their homes or if they plan to stay.

Guyader said flooding of the first home on River Road was reported at about 8 a.m., as water overflowed the Red River.

Area residents are responsible for diking their own homes, Guyader said, adding people opting to remain behind should be wary of downed hydro lines.
