WINNIPEG — Amateur Scott Loewen of Pine Ridge emerged from a three-man playoff in today’s qualifying round to gain one of the four spots available for this week’s Canadian Tour Players Cup.
Loewen shot an even-par round of 71 at Pine Ridge and then parred the first two playoff holes to earn his entry into Manitoba’s annual pro-tour stop that starts Thursday at the Birds Hill area course.
Jim Fitzpatrick of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., had the qualifying-round’s best score of three-under-par 68, one better than Mark Bourgeois of Dieppe, N.B.
The other two spots available today went to Mitchell Fox of Okotoks, Alta., who holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, and Loewen, whose par at the par-4 second bested a three-putt bogey by Phil Telliard of Riverside, Calif., for the final spot.
Loewen’s inclusion raises the Manitoba contingent to 10 in this year’s 200,000 professional tournament.
The field of 156 players starts Thursday at Pine Ridge and after a 36-hole cut, play in the 72-hole will conclude Sunday afternoon.
Tickets for the tournament are available at the gates at Pine Ridge, which is located east on Garven Road off Hwy. 59.
