PINAWA — Riding some confidence from a positive Players Cup experience last week, Pine Ridge’s Scott Loewen is setting the pace on the first day of the Manitoba men’s amateur championship today.
Loewen, 23, fired a five-under-par 67 at the Pinawa Golf Club today, four better than his next-closest rival to start the 72-hole championship.
Tyler Mancini, also of Pine Ridge, was the only other player on this morning’s draw to break par, posting a one-under 71 after bogeying the last two holes at the 6,589-yard course.
Niakwa’s Scott Markham was in at 72, the same score as Selkirk’s Brian Buffie.
Last year’s provincial team members, Garth Collings and Peter More failed to break par. More posted a 74 and Collings, who lost in a playoff last year to Brad Kirton, shot 75.
Kirton is not in the field this week. He has decided to turn pro, but is caddying for Mancini in this event.
Loewen birdied the first three holes at Pinawa today and was four-under through five holes.
He suffered bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 but rebounded with a nice finish, making birdies at the 16th and 17th holes to post his 67.
Play continues through Thursday. The final two rounds of the championship move to Elmhurst.
