WINNIPEG – Andrew Swan will get tough on criminals if he becomes Manitoba’s next premier.
The leadership candidate, one of three vying for outgoing Premier Gary Doer, said today he’ll commit to more community crime prevention measures and more support for law enforcement.
Swan made his pledge with Mike Sutherland, president of the Winnipeg Police Association.
Sutherland said the WPA supports Swan as next premier, an important endorsement as historically the police union does not publicly endorse political candidates.
Swan said he’ll put more resources into community patrols, enhance drug court and create a mental health court so that offenders get proper treatment.
He also said among other initiatives he’d launch a police cadet program and target more resources to go after street gangs and organized crime groups.
Swan made his announcement a day before Justice Minister Dave Chomiak is to unveil the province’s new anti-gang strategy.
