WINNIPEG –  Free Press justice reporter Mike McIntyre reported live at 2 p.m. Thursday from the trial of two men charged with first-degree murder in the death of  a pregnant woman in 2007.

Nathanael Mark Plourde, 21 and Jose Manuel Toruno, 21, pleaded guilty Thursday to murder charges in in the death of Roxanne Fernando, 24, who was slain in February 2007 in what police and justice officials have described as one of the worst cases in recent memory.  Her beaten body was found several days after her death buried in a snowy ditch.

Plourde pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree murder in the case.  He faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no parole for 25 years. Toruno pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Sentencing will take place Friday morning at 10 a.m.

A 17-year-old co-accused pleaded guilty to first-degree last year and was given the maximum youth sentence — six years of prison and four years of probation — for what was described in court as a “callous, well-planned execution”. The Crown agreed not to try to raise him to adult court where he would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years upon conviction.
