WINNIPEG – Free Press justice reporter Mike McIntyre reported live via Twitter from the courtroom Friday as Nathanael Plourde and Jose Toruno were sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the 2007 death of Roxanne Fernando

Nathanael Mark Plourde, 21, admitted Thursday to first-degree murder and on Friday was handed the mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Jose Manuel Toruno, 21, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder under a plea deal with the Crown. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years.

A 17-year-old co-accused pleaded guilty to first-degree last year and was given the maximum youth sentence — six years of prison and four years of probation — for what was described in court as a "callous, well-planned execution". The Crown agreed not to try to raise him to adult court.

Fernando, 24 — known to friends and family members as "Apple" — was found dead in a snowy ditch near Mollard Road and Ritchie Street in northwest Winnipeg several days after she disappeared in Feburary 2007.

Fernando had learned she was pregnant with Plourde’s child weeks before her death, court heard in the teen’s case. In the youth’s case the court heard her murder was planned because she refused to have an abortion, but Plourde’s lawyer told the court today that the pregnancy had nothing to do with the offence.
