WINNIPEG – It was an unusual case of road rage last week when a Winnipeg man walking in a store parking lot was beaten up by a stranger.
The alleged attack, which a police spokeswoman called “totally unprovoked," began when the 49-year-old victim was walking in the parking lot of a big-box store in the 1300 block of Sargent Avenue last Thursday around 1:30 p.m.
The driver of a passing pick-up truck yelled at him, and the man waved at the driver, mistakenly assuming he knew the man, police said Tuesday.
The driver then got out of his car and punched, kicked and beat the victim with a tire iron, leaving the victim with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries to his upper and lower body.
The suspect then got back into his vehicle and drove away, police said.
A witness wrote down the pick-up trucks licence plate number and contacted police. A suspect turned himself in to police the following day, after police officers contacted him.
A 22-year-old Winnipeg man faces charges of assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The man was released on a promise to appear, said police.
