WINNIPEG – A 29-year-old Winnipeg woman is facing charges after a taxicab driver was assaulted and his cab stolen in Transcona this morning.

A woman called a cab around 7 a.m. to take her to a convenience store at Regent Avevnue and Plessis Road, police said. The woman paid the driver her fare, but then told the taxi driver to hand back the cash.

She then beat up the driver, who fled the cab.

Police said the woman then took the wheel of the taxi and took off to the west down Regent Avenue.

The taxi struck another vehicle stopped at a red light at Regent and Rougeau Road, police said, then sped away, hitting another vehicle before the driver lost control near Garven Road and Lagimodiere Boulevard.

Leanne Daniels, 29, is charged with robbery, impaired driving, failure to provide breath sample, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault and numerous charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

She is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
