EDMONTON – It started with a hiccup, but Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton has his game and his team back on the rails at the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials.

Stoughton and his Charleswood Curling Club crew of Kevin Park, Rob Fowler and Steve Gould handed Edmonton’s Kevin Koe his first loss in Tuesday morning action at ‘The Roar of the Rings’ in Edmonton with a 6-5 decision. The victory improves Stoughton & Co. to 2-1 with a game Tuesday night against Kevin Martin.

“It feels pretty good right now,” said Stoughton. “You could always play better and make perfect shots and that’s what you’re striving for. But the guys are playing well and we’ve got to make the big shots and we had a couple today.

“We’re going now. It doesn’t mean you won’t have hiccups here and there and stumble. We’re taking it a game at a time. We’ll go now and prep for tonight’s game and see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Jason Gunnlaugson of Beausejour fell to 0-3 with a 6-4 loss to Glenn Howard. As has been the case throughout this event, Gunnlaugson received a huge cheer with a huge triple takeout in the ninth that allowed him to score two – a shot that left Howard high-fiving the young skip.

“It was good to finally make one,” said Gunnlaugson. “I think they were just waiting to blow up. It was nice to have that reaction because it’s been a bit of a struggle the first few games, especially personally so it was nice to have them roar there.”

Jennifer Jones and her St. Vital foursome are hoping to even their record at 2-2 this afternoon. She is in action against Cheryl Webster on the 2 p.m. draw.
