The domestic-assault charge against former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly will be dropped if he takes a one-day anger-management course. Kelly was charged after an incident with his ex-girlfriend at his home in Bridgeport, Pa., on Dec. 17 — the same day he was fired by the Bombers board of directors after one year at the helm of a football team that finished 7-11 and missed the playoffs.
A Pennsylvania district court judge gave Kelly, 51, a month to complete the anger-management course, after which the misdemeanour domestic assault and harassment charges would disappear.
Kelly, in a text message to the Free Press, said he had no comment on the matter.
According to a criminal complaint filed in December, police in Bridgeport, about 30 kilometres north of Philadelphia, went to Kelly’s home after receiving a 911 call from the residence reporting a domestic dispute in progress.
Kelly’s ex-girlfriend, Andrea Peterson, accused him of hitting her, but he claimed he had only grabbed her in self-defence after she hit him.
Kelly was arrested and charged with simple assault and harassment.
Earlier this week, Kelly and the Bombers reached a financial settlement that pays the fired coach a lump sum of about $160,000 from the two years remaining on his contract.
The judge’s decision brings to a close Kelly’s tumultuous season at the helm of the Bombers, a year plagued by confrontations with the media and fans and a handful of other incidents that dragged the club’s brand through the mud.
But although the team occasionally struggled, it was also made over into a younger squad with more salary-cap flexibility.
The Bombers would have had a chance to play host to a home playoff game if they won the last regular-season contest of the year, but they lost to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
