WINNIPEG – Blue boxes across Winnipeg will be replaced by 240-litre carts this September, as council’s public works committee has chosen a new recycling contractor.
Last fall, the city’s water-and-waste department asked Winnipeggers whether they like their existing blue boxes or wanted to see them replaced by larger carts.
The department also solicited bids from private contractors interested in collecting Winnipeg recyclables.
This morning, council’s public works committee voted to approve a 7.5-year, $35 million recycling contract with National Waste Services, which would begin at 185,000 Winnipeg homes this September.
The company prepared the lowest annual bid for weekly collection using 240-litre rolling carts.
The contract still faces approval from executive policy committee next week and council as a whole on Feb. 24.
Recycling collection at Winnipeg apartments and condos is conducted by BFI Canada. That contract expires in 2012.
