ARMD
* ARMD is an age-related, degenerative disease of the macula, a small area at the centre of the retina. The growth of blood vessels into the retina can prevent sufferers from seeing fine details, and can lead to blindness.
* ARMD affects more Canadians than many other well-known diseases. In fact, it affects more Canadians than breast cancer, prostate cancer, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease combined and is the leading cause of vision loss in Canadians.
* It is estimated that more than a million Canadians have ARMD and more than 100,000 are currently affected by wet ARMD, with the incidence expected to double within the next 25 years.
* After age 80, one person in four suffers from ARMD and with the aging population growing, the incidence of ARMD is expected to increase.
