POLICE have arrested several people after a woman was attacked and undressed in an inner-city park early Saturday morning.
The 34-year-old victim was walking through a park near Notre Dame Avenue and Sherbrook Street around 12:30 Saturday morning when she was approached by a group of males and females, police said.
The group surrounded the woman, physically assaulted her and knocked her to the ground, then kicked and punched her in the head and body, police said. Most of the group then walked away, leaving an 18-year-old man with the victim.
The man was undressing the victim and attempting to sexually assault her when police, summoned by people who witnessed the assault, arrived on the scene.
Police officers, including the canine unit, tracked several suspects in the area. Several people, including an 18-year-old man, were taken into custody. Police said they will be facing "a number of charges."
The victim was transported to the hospital in unstable condition suffering from numerous injuries to her upper body. Her condition has since been upgraded to stable.
Anyone who has information on the attack is asked to contact the police sex-crimes unit at 986-6245.
Stabbed over smoke
A 54-year-old man was stabbed multiple times after refusing to give a cigarette to a stranger Friday night, police say.
The man was walking in the area of Flora Avenue and McKenzie Street Friday at around 10:15 p.m. when police say two unknown males approached him, one asking for a cigarette.
The man declined, and the subsequent conversation turned into a fight in which the 54-year-old was stabbed a number of times in the upper body.
The suspects fled and the victim was able to walk to a nearby business, where emergency crews and police were notified of the attack.
The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition, and has since been upgraded to stable.
Police are continuing their investigation.
