WINNIPEG – Winnipeg Goldeyes reliever Ian Thomas is the 2010 Northern League rookie pitcher of the year, the club announced this afternoon.
The 23-year-old lefthander from Virigina Beach, Va. posted a 5-1 record and a 1.64 ERA working out of the bullpen for the Goldeyes this season. Thomas struck out 60 batters in 55 innings pitched, walking just 20 and holding opposing batters to a microscopic .182 batting average.
Goldeyes spokesman Scott Unger said Thomas is going to play ball in Columbia this winter on the same club as 2010 Goldeyes teammates Aharon Eggleston and Justin Justice.
Thomas was one of the few bright spots on a Goldeyes club that posted its worst record in club history this summer and finished out of the playoffs.
The Northern League championship is scheduled to be decided this weekend in Fargo. The Fargo RedHawks lead the best-of-five championship final 1-0 over the Kansas City T-Bones.
Game 2 in that series is scheduled for tonight in KC before the series moves to Fargo for the duration. Game 3 is scheduled for Fargo’s Newman Outdoor Field Friday evening.
