Bombers down Lions 47-35

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers downed the B.C. Lions  47-35 in a spectacular comeback at a sunny Canad Inns Stadium this afternoon.

 Winnipeg opened the scoring when kicker Justin Palardy booted a 41-yard field goal at the 6:20 mark. Palardy accounted for all the scoring, missing a 31-yard attempt for a single with four minutes to play in the quarter.

 B.C. kicker Sean Whyte put his stamp on this one with a 49-yard field goal to open the second quarter. He later added a punt single to square the game at four.

 Bombers running back Fred Reid finally found a hole with 5:33 left in the half, escaping the Lions defence for a 44-yard touchdown run. That major was set-up by a Merrill Johnson fumble recovery after B.C. return man Yonus Davis bobbled a punt at midfield.

 Davis made amends for the fumble when he broke a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown to give the visitors their first lead of the day. Geroy Simon hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass a few minutes later to make it a 22-11 Lions lead.

  Whyte added a 19-yard field goal and Lions WR Emmar Arceneaux caught a 17-yard TD pass to close out the scoring in the quarter.

 The game marks the first start for Bombers quarterback Alex Brink. The rookie went 4-of-18 for 61 yards before being replaced by Steven Jyles with five minutes to go in the third quarter.

 Coming into the game, Winnipeg has lost eight of nine games – including a 16-14 decision to the Lions at Empire Field last week. B.C. is winners of four of five heading into the afternoon.

 The Bombers are in Montreal next Sunday.
