WINNIPEG - It might be the easiest call Blue Bomber head coach Paul LaPolice makes this season. And he made it official Tuesday afternoon: Steven Jyles will be the starting quarterback this Sunday in Montreal against the Alouettes.

WINNIPEG – It might be the easiest call Blue Bomber head coach Paul LaPolice makes this season. And he made it official Tuesday afternoon: Steven Jyles will be the starting quarterback this Sunday in Montreal against the Alouettes.

“Steven will start,” said LaPolice. “Steven performed well and put us in position to win the football game and that is one of the things we’ve been asking from him — to finish a game for us.”

Benched last week in favour of rookie Alex Brink despite owning the second-best quarterback-efficiency rating in the CFL, Jyles came out of the bullpen to lead the Bombers to their improbable 47-35 overtime win over the B.C. Lions on Thanksgiving Monday. Jyles entered the game with the Bombers trailing 25-11 and threw for two touchdowns, one each to Terrence Edwards and Greg Carr as part of the dramatic comeback that keeps the team’s fleeting playoff hopes alive.

Winnipeg is now 4-10 and trails the Lions, now 5-9, by two points. In order to qualify as a crossover playoff team, the Bombers would have to finish with more points than the Lions or Edmonton Eskimos, also 4-10.

Brink struggled in his first pro start, completing just four of 18 passes for 61 yards.

“In the third quarter we still had a lead with Alex (11-8 before unravelling to fall behind 32-11) and he had protected the ball,” said LaPolice. “He missed some throws and located some throws, which was disappointing. He didn’t have an understanding where the receiver was once or twice. Some of the other ones I would say were first-game jitters.”

The Bombers exited the game with just one significant injury as linebacker Merrill Johnson is expected to be out for at least a week with a knee problem.
