Steven Fletcher has done it again in Charleswood-St. James Assiniboia.

“It’s humbling and exciting,” Fletcher said last night before a jubilant crowd chanting “Steven, Steven” at his campaign headquarters.

“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to represent the area again,” said Fletcher.

“This is a great day for democracy, Canada and those who believe in a strong, united country.”

The man who made history as Canada’s first quadriplegic MP is firmly ensconced in the riding that covers southwestern Winnipeg.

In 2004, Fletcher was little more than a long-shot running against Liberal star candidate and former mayor Glen Murray. He beat Murray, who ran in what was supposed to be a safe Liberal seat held by Liberal John Harvard for more than a decade.

Last night, the Liberals were finishing a distant third before all the votes were counted, and the NDP a very distant second.

Fletcher has turned the formerly red riding into solid Tory blue.
