Howell takes on new coaching duties with Bombers

Markus Howell will continue his football career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers but it will now be as a coach.

Howell, 36, retired as a player earlier this month after an 11-year Canadian Football League career which included six seasons with the Bombers.

The Bombers announced Wednesday that Howell will serve as defensive and special teams assistant coach.

“I’m very grateful to have been given this opportunity by Coach LaPolice and the rest of the coaching staff,” Howell said in a press release.  “With my playing days now over, I’m excited to turn my attention to coaching and look forward to working with the rest of the staff as they prepare for the upcoming season.”

As a player, Howell was considered “a triple threat” as he played on both sides of the ball as a receiver and defensive back and was a kick returner.

“We’re ecstatic to bring Markus Howell on board. In my 10 years coaching in the CFL he is one of the most consummate professionals I’ve ever worked with,” said Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice in a statement.

“He’s played all sides of the ball in the CFL and will make an immediate impact by being a great asset and mentor to our young players.”
