WINNIPEG – The big names – first-overall draft pick Henoc Muamba and fourth-overall choice Jade Etienne – have yet to put their names on a contract, but the Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to lock up their homegrown talent.
The club announced Friday they have come to terms with draft picks Brendan Dunn and Paul Swiston, both offensive lineman and both selected in the CFL’s Canadian Draft earlier this month. Their signings, coupled with the agreements with receiver Liam Mahoney and running back Carl Volny announced earlier, leaves just Muamba and Etienne unsigned from the latest draft.
Bomber management has said repeatedly it expects both players to be signed and on the field in advance of training camp, which opens next Wednesday with rookies and on Sunday with the full squad.
Dunn (6-7, 285, Western Ontario) was the Bombers’ third-round selection (17th overall) in this year’s draft. A D-lineman to begin his career, he switched to the opposite side of the trenches after two years and was part of a group that helped the Mustangs lead the CIS in rushing yards per game (253.7).
Swiston (6-9, 342, Calgary) was drafted in the fourth round (24th overall) after coming off an impressive season where he was named the Canada West Lineman of the Year, a Canada West All-Star and a second team All-Canadian.
As well, the Bombers also announced that they have signed import wide receiver, Greg Betterson (6-0, 200, Delta State). Betterson caught 45 passes for 639 yards and nine touchdowns – including three game-winners — in his final season of Division II football.
Meanwhile, the club announced it is officially over 18,000 season tickets, surpassing last season’s total.
