You, too, could have got close to U2 if you had been at the airport or Burton Cummings Theatre on Friday night.
About a dozen Winnipeggers were thrilled when the Irish rockers walked off their tour jet on the west side of a Winnipeg airport to sign autographs and pose for photographs — albeit on the other side of a chain-link fence.
“Bono immediately came from the plane and made a beeline right to the fence to greet the fans there,” Winnipeg Free Press freelance photographer David Lipnowski said.
“He showed genuine interest in people. And then The Edge joined him as well.”
The band jumped into the lead cars of a 12-vehicle entourage and drove to the downtown theatre.
“They got out to meet the 250 to 300 people at the rear of the theatre,” Lipnowski said.
“They spent 15 to 20 minutes signing autographs, hugging people and posing for photos… Bono said to a couple of children ‘When I grow up I want to be like you’ and pointed to them.
“Then they went into the back entrance of the theatre and that was it.”
U2 plays Canad Inns Stadium on Sunday.
