Cheveldayoff will be busy as he takes over as hockey team’s GM

Kevin Cheveldayoff won’t have much time to get used to his new office before having to begin making major decisions.

There is a long list of hockey decisions that will need to be made by the new GM of Winnipeg’s yet to be named NHL franchise.

Cheveldayoff will be named GM today at a 2 p.m. press conference. Before the maintenance crew can put a nameplate up on his office door, Cheveldayoff will need to begin the selection process for a new coaching staff.

There’s also a draft coming up in less than three weeks with the No. 7 pick in the first round at his disposal.

Cheveldayoff, the 41-year-old Saskatoon native, was general manager of the IHL’s and AHL’s Chicago Wolves for 12 years prior to his hire by the Blackhawks as GM Stan Bowman’s chief lieutenant and cap specialist.

The new GM has five championships on his resume, a Stanley Cup, two Turner Cups and two Calder Cups.

In that regard, he’s been well-known to current Manitoba Moose GM and True North vice-president Craig Heisinger for a long time.

Cheveldayoff and Heisinger go back farther. Cheveldayoff played four seasons in the late 1980s for the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL when Heisinger worked there as the team’s equipment manager.

Their relationship has continued and broadened over the years, even despite some bitter head-to-head battles by their professional teams on the ice.
