Craig Ramsay expects to find out if he’s going to be retained as head coach of Winnipeg’s NHL team in the next day or so.
“We had a good meeting and I really enjoyed talking to (GM Kevin Cheveldayoff) Chevy. He’s in charge and he has to do what’s right for him and what feels right to him. I respect that,” said Ramsay. “We didn’t really talk timeline but I expect I’ll hear something in the next day or so.”
Ramsay was head coach of the Atlanta Thrashers last year and still has a year remaining on his contract. True North purchased the Thrashers for relocation to Winnipeg this spring and are expected to have the sale and relocation approved by the NHL’s board of governors on Tuesday.
Cheveldayoff has also interviewed Claude Noel, Craig MacTavish and Mike Haviland for the head coaching position.
Ramsay is in Minneapolis visiting family and will be there for this weekend’s NHL Entry Draft. Cheveldayoff will almost certainly have to make a decision prior to Thursday in order to allow Ramsay the opportunity to seek other employment at the draft if he no longer figures in Winnipeg’s plans.
“I’m here and would be able to talk to anyone if that’s the case. There are other opportunities,” said Ramsay. “It will all work out one way or another. But we did talk about sooner rather than later being the best situation. Chevy understands that.”
