WINNIPEG — It’s the equivalent of rock-star day at Pine Ridge Golf Club.
Winnipegger Jonathan Toews and 17 present and former NHLers traded their sticks and skates for clubs and balls for the Winnipeg Free Press Jonathan Toews and Friends Celebrity Pro-Am.
The hockey stars, 18 Canadian Tour pros and 36 amateurs were off on the first and 10th tees at mid-morning today in a pro-am with a championship flavour — walking only, caddies, everyone playing their own ball, walking scoring signs and even the Chicago Blackhawks web site television crew following Toews in Winnipeg for the second straight summer.
The crew was here last year to record the celebrations and Toews charity golf tournament — held for a second straight year on Monday this week — after Toews and the Hawks won the Stanley Cup.
It’s all part of the Players Cup Hosted By Jonathan Toews this week at the Ridge.
“I play a lot of charity tournaments when I’m back here,” said New Jersey Devils forward Travis Zajac, a Winnipegger. “It’s the only time I can get out and have some fun.
“I like the scrambles where you can take the best ball and you’re never hitting from the trees. Today’s going to be a bit of a challenge, maybe dangerous for the fans but it’ll still be fun.”
Zajac said he’s experienced the buzz about Winnipeg’s return to the NHL this fall both inside the city and elsewhere.
“It’s definitely exciting, being a Jets fan when I was younger,” Zajac said. “This is great for Winnipeg and hockey in the city.”
He added, laughing: “I have looked at the schedule and we play Dec. 3 and Jan. 14 and I think my phone will be shut off those days if people are looking for tickets.”
Former Jets defenceman and legend Dave Ellett was also in the field this morning and he said the interest in the city’s return to the NHL stretches far and wide.
The story and dredged up many old Jets highlights, including Ellett’s double-overtime playoff goal against Edmonton in 1990.
“I’ve had emails about that, people coming out of the woodwork telling me they’ve seen it again,” Ellett beamed. “That sure is a long time ago.”
The $200,000 Canadian Tour championship begins in earnest on Thursday.
