REPORTS that Winnipeg Blue Bombers QB Buck Pierce was suffering from heatstroke Tuesday were incorrect. Just ask him.

“Is that what it’s going to be like now?” Pierce asked reporters at Canad Inns Stadium, after one scribe inquired about his ability to beat the heat.

“For the record, I don’t have heatstroke. I’m good.”

KEN GIGLIOTTI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Buck Pierce: back at work

The 29-year-old, considered day-to-day with what the team is calling a bruised left thigh injury suffered during the first half of last Thursday loss to Calgary, took his turns under centre with the first-team offence, rolling out, completing passes, and generally doing what CFL quarterbacks do.

“I feel good… it will feel better (today),” Pierce said.

But will he play Saturday?

That’s the big question around the Bombers now that he’s back on the field. The fact he’s on the field lead many to believe it’s all systems go, but he hasn’t done any real, game-speed running yet.

Throwing to receivers with no pass rush is a healthy activity; having 250-pound defenders chasing you down and trying to pound you into the turf can’t be good for the thighs.

Word around the club is that Pierce needs to show that he can move and cut at full speed before they’ll allow him to make the trip to Toronto. He’ll need to prove that today or at the very latest, Thursday morning. If he can’t, QB Alex Brink will make his second career start.

Pierce is confident he’ll be in there against the Argos.

“It’s not Saturday,” he said. “Football is not a hypothetical world but I feel good enough to play. I’ll be ready to go.”

HOT STUFF: Getting back to the heat for a second…

With the mercury at 34 C during practice, the Bombers made the curious decision to extend the time on the field by 20 minutes Tuesday.

The reason: An increase in water breaks.

Head coach Paul LaPolice said the need for water delayed the session slightly, and while OL Brendon LaBatte did leave the field early, the coach said no players were in danger from the extreme temperature.

“Some of the big guys, if they have any concerns with the heat we get ’em inside,” LaPolice said.

The team returns to practice at Canad Inns Stadium this morning.
