An industrial-sized dumpster was “basically engulfed in flames” shortly after midnight Saturday, just metres from apartments torched last week on Fairlane Avenue, a witness says.

John Phillips was driving down the street when he saw the dumpster, he told the Free Press.

Police said there was a “possible fire” or attempt to set a fire in a garbage bin in that area just before midnight Saturday.

“Two male youths were possibly attempting to set a fire,” Const. Jason Michalyshen said.

Firefighters responded and while police did not attend the scene, they are currently investigating the incident, Michalyshen said.

“It will be documented and followed up on in light of everything that’s been going on this summer,” Michalyshen said, referring to the string of arsons in Winnipeg over the past months.

Apartments in the Fairlane Meadows complex in the 200 block of Fairlane Avenue, in St.-James-Assiniboia, suffered an estimated $600,000 in damage last Tuesday morning. The arson task force is investigating.
