Thanks to what was arguably the defensive play of the year, Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker Joe Lobendahn was named the CFL defensive player of the week Tuesday.
The fourth-year player recorded seven tackles and forced a fumble in Winnipeg’s 30-27 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last Friday.
On the forced fumble, Lobendahn thwarted a sure touchdown by Ticats receiver Chris Williams by tracking him down from 20-yards out and punching the ball loose at the one-yard-line early in the third quarter.
The ball was recovered by the Bombers in the endzone.
It’s the second time this season Lobendahn has been named defensive player of the week. The Hawaii-native picked up the award following a strong game against the Toronto Argonauts in Week 2. It’s the third time in his career Lobendahn has earned the league honour.
Other CFL players selected for the weekly awards include Calgary quarterback Henry Burris (offensive); Montreal kicker Sean Whyte (special teams); and Calgary WR Johnny Forzani (top Canadian).
