Selinger unveils NDP’s 5 priorities for Manitoba

Premier Greg Selinger revealed his five priorities today for keeping Manitoba “on the right track.”

At a campaign stop in the constituency of Brandon West Tuesday afternoon, Selinger said the priorities include:

• improving health care,
• expanding jobs, education and training opportunities,
• keeping living costs affordable,
• making communities safer and
• maintaining Manitoba Hydro as a publicly owned entity.

This is my contract with Manitobans,” said Selinger. “These are commitments we believe in and commitments Manitobans know we will keep.”

In the 2007 general election, the Conservatives won Brandon West by only 56 votes. However, former Brandon mayor and member of Parliament Rick Borotsik, who held the seat, is not running for re-election.

Earlier Monday, Selinger formally kicked off the party’s re-election bid this morning in a constituency represented by the Conservatives since the Filmon era.

The premier chose the Gateway Community Centre in the River East constituency, long held by Tory Bonnie Mitchelson, for the party’s first official event. In 2007, Mitchelson won the seat by only 52 votes over the NDP’s Kurt Penner. Penner is challenging her again this time around.

Selinger told a crowd of about 350 supporters, including most of the NDP’s city candidates, the province’s population is growing and that their team will protect the services that people count on.

“Something big is happening in Manitoba. We are home to a new sense of pride and optimism,” he said.

Selinger will now travel to Brandon, where he will make a policy announcement this afternoon.
