The William Lyburn curling team from Deer Lodge won the Selkirk One Insurance Classic men’s bonspiel while the Joelle Brown team of Fort Rouge won the women’s division of the bonspiel on Monday night.

Lyburn, whose team includes James Kirkness, Alex Forrest and Tyler Forrest, defeated the defending champion Sean Grassie team of Deer Lodge 7-2 in the final.

It was the opening event in the 2011-2012 Manitoba Curling Tour. Under the MCT’s new ranking system, Team Lyburn earned 30 points and moved into first place.

In the women’s final, the Brown team of Tracey Lavery, Susan Baleja and Jennifer Cawson defeated the Barb Spencer team from Fort Rouge 4-2.

Brown earned 30 points and Spencer earned 25 to move to second and third respectively in the women’s rankings behind the Chelsea Carey team from Morden. The Carey team won only one game in Selkirk but remained ranked first due to a pair of event championships in spring bonspiels.

On the men’s side, the Daley Peters team from Fort Garry (Brendan Taylor, Kyle Werenich and Terry Dreger) lost the semifinal 7-3 to the Grassie team but remained second in the MCT rankings. Grassie moved up to fourth behind Brandon’s Rob Fowler in third.
