TORONTO – TSN has locked up the rights to national and world curling championships for the next nine years.
The sports specialty channel and the Canadian Curling Association announced Thursday that TSN will continue as the multi-media rightsholder on the CCA’s properties until the end of the 2019-20 season.
Those events include the men’s and women’s world championships, national men’s and women’s championships, Canadian junior championships, Canada Cup, Continental Cup and the qualifying tournaments for the 2014 Winter Olympics. TSN became the exclusive rightsholder of those events in 2008.
The deal includes 250 hours of French coverage on RDS and RDS2, which is another division of TSN’s owner Bell Media.
“This is one of the most significant items that the CCA has been able to achieve in our recent history,” CCA’s chief executive officer Greg Stremlaw said in a statement.
The 2011 Tim Hortons Brier averaged 685,000 viewers per draw in March and the women’s national championship, the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, averaged 514,000 in February. The championship game of each tournament in 2010 drew 1.5 million and 1.7 million watchers respectively.
“Curling is one of the top broadcast properties in Canada and has been a cornerstone on TSN since Day 1,” TSN president Stewart Johnston said. “Locking in such a solid audience driver on a long-term extension further strengthens TSN’s leadership in the marketplace for years to come.”
