JENNIFER JONES and her St. Vital rink dropped a 4-3 decision to B.C.’s Kelley Law and her New Westminster team in quarter-final action at the Red Deer Curling Classic Monday morning.

Despite the loss, Jones earned $2,500 for reaching the playoff round of the $36,000 four-day World Curling Tour event.

Jones made her way into the money through the B-side bracket, winning five straight games throughout the course of the weekend, including a 4-3 win over rival Cathy Overton-Clapham.

Jones, a four-time Canadian champion, was behind the eight-ball early against Law. Down 4-0 after the fifth end, the Winnipeg foursome stormed back to make it a one-score game with one end to play, but Law ran Jones out of rocks to advance to the semifinal.

Jones and her team will next see action when they’ll try to defend their crown at the $50,000 Sun Life Classic in Brantford, Ont. (Nov. 18-21).

FOWLER GRABS INVITE: Brian Fowler has qualified for the 2012 Senior Men’s Provincial Championship.

Fowler and his Brandon team of Kelly McMechan, Myles Olmstead and Don Williams defeated Deer Lodge’s Mike Mahon (Ian Mahon, Blair Smith, Larry Lagace) 6-2 in the final of the McDiarmid Lumber Senior Men’s Bonspiel at the Thistle Curling Club Monday afternoon. The provincial senior men’s event goes Feb. 23-27 at the Beausejour Curling Club.

JUNIOR BERTHS: Four more junior teams have qualified for the provincial curling championships in January.

Fort Rouge’s Joey Witherspoon and his rink (Connor Njegovan, Taylor McIntyre, Brett Brezden) defeated Assiniboine Memorial’s Derek Blanchard (Trevor Calvert, Scott Bruce, Ty Envik) 9-6 and Deer Lodge’s Nick Good, (Connor McIntyre, Cole Peters, Robbie Gordon) snuck past St. Vital’s Matt Dunstone (Curtis Kaatz, Daniel Grant, Brendan MacCuish) 4-3 in the finals of the Canola junior men’s berth bonspiel in Morden over the weekend.

With the wins, both the Witherspoon and Good teams earned invites to the Canola Junior Men’s Provincial Championship Jan. 5-9 at the West Kildonan Curling Club.

Meanwhile in Ste. Anne, St. Vital’s Briane Meilleur and Assiniboine’s Katie Spencer have both qualified for the junior women’s provincial championship Jan. 5-9 in Minnedosa.

Meilleur (Krysten Karwacki, Amy Agnew, Meagan Grenkow) defeated Victoria’s Alyssa Vandepoele (Kate Cameron, Abby Ackland, Sheyna Andries) 7-6 , while Spencer (Holly Spencer, Kelsey Resler, Julie Oryniak) outlasted La Salle’s Kayla Curtis (Jordyn McIntyre, Jenna Campbell, Rachel Morris) 9-7 last weekend.
