While her husband was doing his part to win a Grand Slam title on Sunday, Sherry Middaugh was taking care of business on the Asham World Curling Tour.
Middaugh, of Coldwater, Ont., cruised to a 7-2 win over Ottawa’s Jenn Hanna in the final of the Royal LePage OVCA Women’s Fall Classic. After blanking the first two ends, Middaugh erupted for seven points over the next three ends — including a decisive four-spot in the fifth.
Hanna got her deuce in the sixth, but then shook hands. Middaugh left with the first-place prize of $5,000, while Hanna took home $2,600.
Sherry’s husband Wayne Middaugh joined Glenn Howard’s team in the off-season. He curled 96 per cent at third in a 6-4 win over Toronto’s John Epping in the final of the GP Car and Home World Cup.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Russia’s Liudmila Privivkova scored her second bonspiel win of the season, stealing the winning point in a 5-4 extra-end victory over Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg at the Stockholm Ladies Cup. Sweden’s Anette Norberg beat Finland’s Ellen Vogt 5-4 for thid.
Meanwhile, Ottawa’s Rachel Homan and Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni made it to today’s eight-team playoff through the A-side at the Red Deer Curling Classic in Red Deer, Alta. Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones and Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott were the B-side winners. The final C-side spots were up for grabs late Sunday night.
On the men’s side, Edmonton natives Jamie King and Kevin Park and Calgary’s Brock Virtue secured passage to today’s playoffs through the A-side. Calgary’s Brent Bawel, Vance Elder of Brooks, Alta., and China’s Rui Liu made it through the B-side. The final two C-side qualifiers were on the ice late Sunday night.
