Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive back Jovon Johnson was named the East division’s most outstanding defensive player Wednesday.

Johnson, 28, was the only Bomber nominee selected to represent the division in the six league award categories. The club’s most outstanding player and special teams recipient, the fourth-year Bomber had a league-best eight interceptions (two of them returned for touchdowns) and 55 tackles to lead what was arguably the CFL’s best defence this season.

Johnson will go up against Saskatchewan linebacker Jerrell Freeman for the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. The West division representative finished with league-high 103 tackles, a team-leading five sacks and three interceptions.

Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo (East) will go up against B.C.

pivot Travis Lulay (West) for the Most Outstanding Players award, while Montreal kicker Sean Whyte (East) goes up against Edmonton running back Jerome Messam (West) for the Most Outstanding Canadian award.

The Most Outstanding Special Teams award is between Toronto kick returner Chad Owens (East) and B.C. kicker Paul McCallum (West); the Most Outstanding Lineman is between Montreal’s Josh Bourke (East) and B.C.’s Jovan Olafioye (West); and the Most Outstanding Rookie honour has Hamilton receiver Chris Williams (East) against Edmonton linebacker JC Sherritt (West).

The league-wide winners will be announced during Grey Cup week at the Gibson’s Finest CFL Player Awards on Thursday, Nov. 24 in Vancouver, site of the 99th Grey Cup.
