Five members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have been named to the CFL all-star team, the league announced this morning.
Defensive backs Jovon Johnson, Jonathan Hefney and Ian Logan along with defensive lineman Odell Willis and offensive lineman Brendon LaBatte were all named league all-stars.
With five all-stars, the Bombers are second in the league only to the BC Lions, who had nine players named as all-stars today.
“We’re certainly proud of what those guys have done,” said Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice. “But we ended our practice with, ‘Those are great (personal) accomplishments. We want to be the best team in the Canadian Football League.'”
The all-stars are selected based on a combination of voting by the fans, head coaches and the Football Reporters of Canada.
“I was undrafted,” said Logan, “so it’s a great story going from undrafted to a CFL all-star. But I never questioned what I was capable of. “
Johnson said the real prize is still ahead of his team, however, with a chance to play in the Grey Cup going to the winner of this Sunday’s East Division final between the Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. “It’s just one more stepping stone in the right direction.”
