PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Defending Manitoba champion Cathy Overton-Clapham is the victim of the first major upset of the Manitoba Scotties Tournament Hearts.

Second seed Overton-Clapham was stunned 7-6 by 14th seed Lisa DeRiviere here at the PCU Centre Wednesday afternoon as Overton-Clapham got her event off to the kind of start she would just as soon forget.

“I struggled a little bit putting the broom in the right spot,” Overton-Clapham said afterward. “They played really well, but we’ve got to forget that game and get ready for the next one.”

DeRiviere, on the other hand, hopes the monster win over the winningest female curler in Manitoba history is just what her young team needed heading into this event.

“Our goal was just to have a really good game with Cathy, keep it close and see what happened,” DeRiviere said. “I think people will be shocked and that’s fine. We were seeded 14th and we’re just kind of here to be the underdog.”

The Overton-Clapham loss was one of three upsets on the 12:15 p.m. draw. Fifth seed Janet Harvey was also surprised 8-7 by East St. Paul’s Kim Link and seventh seed Michelle Montford was upset 8-7 by Dauphin’s Lisa Menard. The only game to unfold according to form saw third seed Chelsea Carey defeat Brandon’s Liza Park 6-2.

The Scotties continues on the 4 p.m. draw when Jennifer Jones plays Terry Ursel, Darcy Robertson plays Kelsey Boettcher, Lori Forbes plays Jill Thurston and Kelsey Russill plays Barb Spencer.
