PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE -- Top seed Jennifer Jones, fourth seed Barb Spencer and sixth seed Jill Thurston will all head into Day 2 of the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts with 2-0 records here on Thursday.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Top seed Jennifer Jones, fourth seed Barb Spencer and sixth seed Jill Thurston will all head into Day 2 of the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts with 2-0 records here on Thursday.

All three teams played their second game on the 4 p.m. draw at the PCU Centre and all three were winners. Jones defeated Terry Ursel of Plumas 8-3, Thurston drilled Lori Forbes of The Pas 9-1 and Spencer beat Kelsey Russill 8-3.

Eighth seed Darcy Robertson looked like she would also move to 2-0 but gave up a three-ender in the 10th end to Kelsey Boettcher of Stonewall to lose 8-7.

Thurston was upbeat about her team’s opening day. “We’re throwing the rock pretty well. We struggled all season, but we’re coming together as a team at the right time, I think.”

Jones second Jill Officer, who was playing her first games of the 2011-12 curling season after taking the winter off to have a baby, said she felt surprisingly well after just two weeks of practice.

“I’m a little sore, but I’d be sore even if I hadn’t just had a baby,” Officer said. “It all actually felt better than I’d expected.”

The Scotties continues here this evening on the 8:15 draw. Second seed Cathy Overton-Clapham — who was shocked 7-6 by Lisa DeRiviere of Miami in her opening game — will try to bounce back tonight against Brandon’s Liza Park. Fifth seed Janet Harvey and seventh seed Michelle Montford are also looking for their first wins. Montford plays East St. Paul’s Kimk Link, while Harvey takes on Brandon’s Lisa Menard. The fourth game of the draw will see third seed Chelsea Carey seek her second win of the day against DeRiviere.
