PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Third seed Chelsea Carey remains undefeated while second seed Cathy Overton-Clapham improved to 2-1 on the 12:15 p.m. draw here at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Thursday.

Carey thumped East St. Paul’s Kim Link 9-2 to improve to 3-0, while Overton-Clapham won her second straight after an opening draw loss with an 8-1 shellacking of Dauphin’s Lisa Menard.

The other two games on the draw saw seventh seed Michelle Montford improve to 2-1 with a 10-4 pounding of Brandon’s Liza Park, while Miami’s Lisa DeRiviere continued to play the role of giant killer with a 6-2 defeat of fifth seed Janet Harvey.

DeRiviere also beat Overton-Clapham on opening day and the convincing defeat of Harvey on Thursday suggested it wasn’t a fluke.

“We’ve played a lot of good teams and had success against them,” said DeRiviere, who also beat Jennifer Jones in a cash spiel last year. “We’re not big on the luck. If we all come together in the same game, that’s when we can curl really well and we can match up against these opponents.”

Overton-Clapham said her team is curling much better since the loss to DeRiviere, but still has a way to go. “We’re still not where we have been all year, but we’re slowly getting better. And I think that’s a good sign,” said Overton-Clapham.

The Scotties continues here this afternoon on the 4 p.m. draw. Top seed Jones, fourth seed Barb Spencer and sixth seed Jill Thurston will all take 3-0 records into the draw. Jones plays Stonewall’s Kelsey Boettcher, Spencer plays Lori Forbes of the The Pas and Thurston plays Terry Ursel of Plumas.

The other game on the draw will see eighth seed Darcy Robertson play Kelsey Russill of Brandon.
