Harvey topples Carey in extra end

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE — Previously undefeated third seed Chelsea Carey was finally toppled here at the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts Friday morning, falling 6-5 in an extra end to former three-time Manitoba womens champion Janet Harvey.

The loss dropped Carey’s round-robin record to 4-1 and set up a first place showdown on the 4 p.m. draw later today with second seed Cathy Overton-Clapham, who improved to 4-1 Friday morning with an 11-5 victory over Assiniboine-Memorial’s Michelle Montford.

Harvey, Montford and Miami’s Lisa DeRiviere — who defeated East St. Paul’s Kim Link 7-5 this morning — are all a game behind the leaders at 3-2.

In the only other game Friday morning, Brandon’s Liza Park defeated Dauphin’s Lisa Menard 6-4. Both of those teams — as well as Link — are now 1-4.

The Scotties continues on the 12:15 p,m. draw as top seed Jennifer Jones — who sustained her first loss Thursday night in a stunning 7-6 upset to Stonewall’s Kelsey Boettcher — attempts to get back on track against eight seed Darcy Robertson.

Jones and Robertson are tied for third place at 3-1 heading into this afternoon, a game behind fourth seed Barb Spencer and sixth seed Jill Thurston, who are both undefeated at 4-0. That will soon change, however, as Thurston and Spencer meet on the next draw.

The other games on the 12:15 p.m. draw will see Boettcher play Brandon’s Kelsey Russill and Terry Ursel of Plumas play Lori Forbes of The Pas.

Boettcher is still alive at 2-2 heading into the draw, while Forbes, Russill and Ursel are all still winless at 0-4.
