REEL

Blues 3 / Jets 2 (SO)

AT THE MTS CENTRE

Big picture

Jets’ fans need to ask themselves this question, forgetting for a moment the lopsided shots on goal advantage (42-16): when this critical eight-game homestand began — a stretch some have said could define the season — would they have been happy with eight of a possible 10 points through five games? Thought so. This is a team with some flaws, but it remains in the playoff picture with March approaching and that’s got to mean something.

Little picture

The resiliency factor is key for the Jets. Winnipeg had been 2-14-1 this year when trailing after the first period, but rallied to tie it in the second and earned a point against a stifling defensive squad.

Game-breaker

In the shootout, the Jets’ Blake Wheeler scored first, but the Blues’ Jaroslav Halak then shut the door on Bryan Little, Evander Kane and Andrew Ladd. St. Louis got shootout goals by Andy McDonald and David Perron for the ‘W.’

Free Press Three Stars

First star Blake Wheeler, right-winger, Winnipeg — Absolutely dominant with two goals and a nifty shootout effort. Best player on the ice and it wasn’t even close.

Second star Jaroslav Halak, G, St. L. — There weren’t a pile of highlight-of-the-night saves, but he was steady in kicking out 40 of 42 shots.

Third star Dustin Byfuglien, D, Wpg. — Led both teams with eight shots on goal and picked his spots better as to when to foray into enemy territory. A solid 24 minutes and 31 seconds of work — again, the most of both squads.
